Compare results from this term with last term’s results on the same assignment. Examine what questions students missed instead of how many. Trends become apparent quickly if you look.

Ask For The Reasoning, Not Just The Answer
Add one line to all your questions: “explain how you know.” Free. Takes a couple minutes to write. Transform how students study overnight.
Spread Testing Out Instead Of Stacking It
One massive exam at the end prompts cramming. Crammed information vanishes after weeks. Three minor quizzes spaced throughout a unit make students review material — the process by which memories are actually formed.
Give Feedback Before The Grade
The second a student sees a score, they cease reading. Give comments back before the mark, a day later. The students will use it instead of skimming over it.
Let Students Assess Each Other’s Work
Having students grade a peer’s answer to a question against an objective rubric makes them know what “good” is. They learn the standard internally, and become quicker to identify the same mistake on their own work.
Write The Assessment First
Plan the test before planning the lessons. It seems backward. But it makes you define specifically what students should be able to do at the end, and every lesson after that has a bullseye to shoot for.
